OVERVIEW

Through rigorous sessions, students learn and practise essential academic conventions and critical thinking skills for successful academic reading, writing, speaking, listening and presenting. Students explore a range of academic genres to prepare them for diverse challenges at university. They engage in authentic experiences such as diagnostic essay writing, follow strategies for effective note taking during mini-lectures, deliver academic presentations and participate in critical seminar discussions.

Students create two final products: the individual portfolio containing assessed academic works and the team project presentation— Roadmap for Navigating a Successful University Life.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING

Students hone their 21st Century skills during teamwork, creating a Roadmap for Navigating a Successful University Life presentation. The design and delivery of the presentation requires application of their newfound skills gained from course learning, experiences and reflection. The project milestones include a self-introduction, a selection of university extracurricular activities that further career opportunities, models of time and money management, a descriptive plan for health and well-being, and samples of academic achievements. Individual portfolio content is selected and combined in the team project to develop and deliver a presentation for a local high school graduating class or university cohort. This community presentation is the culmination of the course.
