Introducing our 2020 International Summer Academy

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY (JULY-AUGUST 2020)

Kindi Education’s International Summer Academy is a three-week programme for 15 to 18-year-old English speakers (min. high B1) from all over the world. The course is residential and hosted at Canterbury Christ Church University in South East England.

A typical week at the Academy is a balance of educational workshops and leisure time. Weekday mornings are spent learning 21st Century life skills in over 50 hours of dynamic educational workshops. Afternoons, evenings and weekends are devoted to exploring England and taking part in a range of exciting sports and challenging adventure activities.

WHAT ARE 21ST CENTURY LIFE SKILLS?

At Kindi Education, we focus on four key life skills:

  • Social and emotional intelligence: developing self-awareness, building constructive relationships, empathy and managing emotions
  • Leadership: making responsible decisions, solving community problems, supporting others, respecting diversity, managing money and presenting to an audience
  • Critical thinking: analysing information, taking part in respectful and thoughtful discussions, considering others’ opinions and articulating your own views
  • Awareness of future choices: setting goals, evaluating your progress and identifying your motivation.

HOW DO STUDENTS LEARN THESE SKILLS?

Our cyclical learning model is ‘Learn, Practise, Reflect’.

Each day, students:

1. Learn and develop essential life skills through interactive activities

2. Practise these life skills by working in project groups (PBL) to develop a ‘survival guide’ for young people facing big changes in their lives

3. Reflect on and critically analyse topics linked to the day’s activities

WHAT EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES DO STUDENTS TAKE PART IN?

Inspired by guest speakers and innovative workshops, students create a ‘survival guide’ for young people facing big changes in their lives. Towards the end of the Academy students apply their learning, reflecting on their experiences in the educational workshops and outdoor activities, to produce a personal plan for their future career, life and wellbeing.

WHAT LEISURE ACTIVITIES DO STUDENTS TAKE PART IN?

Afternoons, evenings and weekends are packed full of adventure activities. From sports and games to sightseeing and cultural visits, there’s something to suit every taste.

A highlight of the Academy experience is a three-day camping expedition in the English countryside. Students work in teams to set up their tents, cook their own food, navigate their way through woodland and learn bush craft skills. Over the three weeks students can choose to take part in zip-wiring, paintballing, forest adventures, dance workshops, five-aside football, tennis, basketball, beach-volleyball, art classes and photography walks. They’ll also visit Leeds Castle, Margate’s beaches and soak up culture in London, including a famous West End show!

Students have access to a dedicated Social Lounge that provides English books, magazines, board games and tablets for using the internet safely. The university gardens are perfect for unwinding and playing outside.
